Um, you must do things differently on the West Island when you go whitebaiting.
On the right side of the Tasman we use a net, not a bloody fishing reel the size of the Cake Tin (Westpac stadium in Wellington). Some mates used a sock when there wasn't a net handy - stunned the 'bait with foot odour.
A whitebait is about this size

you'd need a bloody small hook on that line if you weren't going to disembowel the thing as you caught it.
er, but, perhaps you're being ironic or something...
oh, and you fish 'em up in estuaries & rivers. no deep sea fishing involved.
whitebait = juvies, tiddlers. sort of the "veal of the sea". quite why there hasn't been an impassioned movement to "save the whitebait", I don't know. save the babies!
kiwis did an effective genocide on them, masters of the overfishing game. baby killers!
Yes, I know about fishing with whitebait *snort* and bearley cages, toadies, yellowtail, leatherjacket, rainbow trout, flounder and that weird-looking fish you always catch that is as ugly as sin.
Mind you, (plastic)cheese slices are excellent for fresh water fishing, especially Rainbow trout which saves the lives of so many insects....
